With the track and field season getting underway on 18 April, we’re looking forward to another summer of competition, development and team spirit across both junior and senior leagues.
Blaydon Harriers athletes will once again take part in two major competitions: the North East Youth Development League (NEYDL) for juniors and the North East Senior Development League (NESDL) for seniors. Both leagues run across four fixtures during the season, giving athletes multiple opportunities to compete, learn and enjoy their athletics throughout the summer.
The NEYDL offers a fun, friendly and inclusive introduction to league athletics for athletes aged 11–16 (U13, U15 and U17). Blaydon competes in a joint team with Wallsend and Gosforth Harriers, allowing young athletes to be part of a supportive, team‑focused environment while competing against clubs from across the region.
Across the four league matches, athletes can choose up to three events per fixture from a wide range including sprints, endurance races, jumps and throws. The emphasis is firmly on participation and development, making it an ideal opportunity to try new events, build confidence, and discover strengths.
The league is completely free to take part in, making it an accessible way for young people to experience track and field in a positive and encouraging setting. Junior athletes should check Spond regularly for fixture information and instructions on how to register and confirm event choices.
For senior athletes, the NESDL (Track and Field League) provides four competitive fixtures across the season and a great opportunity to represent the club while scoring points as part of a team. Blaydon Harriers currently compete in Division 1, in a combined team with Elswick Harriers.
Athletes can enter multiple events at each match, making the league perfect for those who want to try something new or support the team where needed. There is no additional charge for Blaydon members, as participation is fully included within your membership.
Each match is a full day of athletics and a brilliant chance to meet competitors from other clubs, support teammates and enjoy the social side of track and field alongside competitive racing.
Track and field competition relies on more than just athletes. Officials and volunteers play a vital role in ensuring safe, well‑run events. Whether it’s helping with officiating, marshalling or event support, volunteering is a great way to give back to the club, learn more about the sport and support fellow athletes.
There are plenty of opportunities to get involved — whether you’re competing, helping out, or doing a bit of both. We’d encourage athletes of all ages and abilities to take part and make the most of another exciting summer of track and field with Blaydon Harriers.
