Bob Houston

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Bob Houston, a much-loved and highly respected member of the Blaydon Harriers community.

Bob gave so much to the club over many years. He served as Chairman for a long period, was a Grade 2 Track and Field Official, supported the induction group whenever needed, and held the role of Club President. His commitment, leadership and quiet determination shaped the club in countless ways.

Bob’s greatest legacy, however, was as the saviour of the Blaydon Race. Following the sudden death of race organiser Dr Jim Dewar after the 24th race, the club was left grieving and unsure how the event could continue. At an emergency committee meeting, Bob—then Chairman—made the decisive call that the race would go on, and he personally took on responsibility for organising it, with the support of other longstanding club members. In an era before online entries and chip timing, this was no small task.

Thousands of postal entries arrived at Bob’s family home, all sorted by hand—envelopes opened, cheques processed, and runners categorised by club, gender and age group. Alongside this, Bob liaised tirelessly with councils, police, safety advisors and sponsors to ensure the race could happen. Without his grit, resolve and extraordinary commitment, the Blaydon Race would almost certainly have ended in 2004.

Blaydon Harrier & Athletics Club owe an immense debt of gratitude to Bob and his family. His impact on the club and the wider running community will never be forgotten.

A service will take place at St. Mary & St. Thomas Aquinas’ Church, Stella Road, Blaydon-on-Tyne, NE21 4LR, at 1:15pm on 29 January, followed by a committal at Mountsett Crematorium, Dipton, Stanley, County Durham, DH9 9JP.

Family flowers only please. Donations are welcome to the family’s chosen charity, Dementia Research UK.

Our thoughts are with Bob’s family and friends at this very difficult time.

Rest in peace, Bob.
