Volunteers are the heartbeat of Blaydon Harriers. Without them, we simply couldn’t do what we do. This month, we’re shining our volunteer spotlight on coach Andrea Clarke. If you’ve ever thought about helping out, Andrea’s story shows just how rewarding it can be.
Coaching is one of the most impactful ways to volunteer – you’ll inspire, support, and develop athletes of all ages and abilities. England Athletics calls coaches “the backbone of our sport” and offers clear pathways, qualifications, and ongoing support to help you succeed.
Getting Started
Andrea began volunteering with Blaydon Harriers around 2018.
“At first, it was just to help out and support others, as I had relevant experience and qualifications. Over time, I’ve taken on regular coaching and I really enjoy it!"
You don’t need to be an elite athlete to start coaching – just enthusiasm and a desire to help others. England Athletics offers two main pathways: one for track and field, and one for off-track environments like road or trail running.
What Volunteering Involves
Andrea is a Coach in Running Fitness (Athletics Coach) and our Lead Welfare Officer. She leads endurance coaching on Tuesdays, sometimes the main Senior session, but always the Junior session. Most weeks it’s on the track, but she likes to mix things up with ‘off track’ sessions for variety.
"My aim is to set sessions that are fun but with the right amount of challenge to help athletes develop."
Coaches create safe, enjoyable, and high-quality experiences for athletes. England Athletics supports coaches with qualifications and development opportunities so you can keep learning and growing.
Favourite Moment
There’s no shortage of highlights for Andrea - every week brings something special.
“From the look on the Seniors’ faces when I explain a ‘hare and hounds’ session, to Juniors hitting a PB or nailing a baton change, those moments make it all worthwhile.”
Why Volunteering Matters
For Andrea, it’s all about the power of the group.
"I love volunteering because everyone performs better whilst running in a group - no one gets by without the help of others. Setting up a session allows that to happen."
Volunteering isn’t just about sport – it’s about community. Research shows it boosts mental wellbeing and helps build stronger, more inclusive clubs. You’ll make a difference for others and for yourself.
Thinking About Getting Involved?
Don't overthink it - Andrea says:
“Don’t stress about it – it’s an hour, all good, just do it!”
England Athletics offers entry-level courses like Leader in Running Fitness and Coaching Assistant, plus advanced qualifications if you want to progress. You can even use prior experience from other sports through their Recognition of Prior Learning process.
A huge thank you to Andrea and all our amazing coaches who give their time and energy to make Blaydon Harriers such a fantastic club. Your dedication helps athletes of all ages access and enjoy athletics – we couldn’t do it without you!
