Blaydon Harrier and Athletics Club has a proud tradition of being run entirely by volunteers. Behind every training session, race, and club event is a team of people who give their time to help others enjoy athletics. This month, we’re shining our volunteer spotlight on one of those people, Alex Muir, our Club Chair and Trustee. Alex’s story is a great example of how much the club means to our community, and why the work we do matters.
Getting Started
Alex first joined Blaydon Harriers as a junior athlete back in 1999. Over the years, he’s taken on more and more responsibility, becoming a Trustee in 2012, Treasurer in 2020, and stepping into the role of Chair in 2023. Alex is a great example of how the club brings people together.
“I got involved through the gentle persuasion of other members."
What Volunteering Involves
As Chair and Trustee, Alex works closely with the committee to ensure the club delivers on its charitable mission: 'Promoting community participation in healthy recreation by providing facilities for athletics'. It’s a big responsibility, but one that Alex takes on with pride.
"It's a bit of a mouthful, but it’s a genuinely meaningful cause."
Favourite Moment
For Alex, one date stands out above all others:
“Ninth of Joon every year.”
Whether it’s the buzz of the race or the pride of seeing the club come together, it’s a moment that never gets old. Alex works closely with the Race Organiser and Race Advisory Group to help make sure the Blaydon Race is a success each year. It’s not just a highlight of the calendar, it’s the event that helps the club continue its work in the community.
Why Volunteering Matters
Alex loves being part of something with deep roots and a strong sense of tradition. The club’s legacy is built on the efforts of volunteers like Alex, who help keep that tradition alive while making sure it’s open and welcoming to new generations.
"Blaydon Harrier and Athletics Club is special because of the tradition and the history of the club. It's a pleasure to play a small part in that."
Thinking About Getting Involved?
Alex’s advice is simple:
“We’re always on the lookout for another pair of hands. No matter how small or large your contribution, it all counts.”
Thanks to Alex and all our volunteers, Blaydon Harriers continues to support people of all ages and abilities to get involved in athletics, stay healthy, and feel part of a community.
