On Sunday 9 November 2025, the Town Moor played host to the Heaton Harriers Memorial Races. This annual fixture, held on Remembrance Sunday, is steeped in tradition and offers a fast, flat course that attracts runners from across the region looking for strong performances and personal bests.
The day began with a two-minute silence at 11:00, a reminder of the race’s origins and its significance in honouring those who served. It was a moving moment shared by athletes, volunteers, and spectators before the racing got underway.
The programme featured something for everyone, from the Mini Moor 1K for our youngest runners to the Junior 3K and 5K races, and of course the headline event – the Senior 10K, which incorporated the NECAA, NEMAA, and British Masters Championships.
Our juniors showed fantastic spirit in the early races, with standout performances from Avoria Graham, who stormed home in 3:46 to take 1st place in the U11 girls, and Charlotte Turnbull, who finished strongly in 4:09 for 3rd place. Both girls ran brilliantly and set the tone for the rest of the day.
In the Senior 10K, Martin Graham lead the way for Blaydon, running a superb 36:26. Next home was Oliver Bailes in 39:29, followed by Michael Friberg with a strong 40:52. In the women’s race, Letha Whitham impressed with 43:05, and Sarah Batsford wasn’t far behind in 44:29. Every runner gave their all, and the camaraderie on display was second to none.
The Memorial Races are more than just a competition; they’re a celebration of running heritage in the North East. For Blaydon Harriers, it’s always a highlight of the calendar, a chance to come together as a club, support each other, and honour the tradition of the sport we love.
Well done to all our athletes, and thank you to Heaton Harriers for hosting such a fantastic event. We can’t wait to be back next year!
