The Great North Run weekend once again proved why it’s one of the highlights of the North East running calendar, and Blaydon Harriers were proud to be part of it.
On Saturday 6 September, the Mini and Junior Great North Runs took over the Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside, with thousands of young runners taking on the 1.5K and 4K courses against the backdrop of the Tyne’s iconic bridges. The atmosphere was electric, with proud parents, grandparents, and coaches lining the route to cheer on the next generation of athletes. Blaydon Harriers juniors joined runners from across the country, and our young athletes gave it their all. The weather was kind and spirits were high as medals were earned and memories made.
Then on Sunday 7 September, it was time for the main event, the Great North Run half marathon. From elite athletes to first-time runners, the streets from Newcastle to South Shields were filled with determination, celebration, and community spirit. Blaydon Harriers were out in force, many running for charities close to their hearts.
As usual, the support along the route was incredible, with crowds cheering every step of the way. For many, it was a personal challenge; for others, a chance to run alongside friends and clubmates. Whatever the motivation, the sense of achievement at the finish line was shared by all.
A huge well done to everyone who represented Blaydon Harriers over the weekend, runners, supporters, volunteers, and coaches. Whether you were racing, cheering, or helping behind the scenes, the Great North Run weekend was a brilliant reminder of why we run, for the challenge, the community, and the joy of being part of something bigger.
